Ready, set, go! Put your expertise into action with a new opportunity. Join the Arizona Department of Public Safety as a Highway Safety & Impaired Driving Instructor Subject Matter Expert—a key role supporting safer roads and stronger training initiatives for Arizona law enforcement.

  • Make an Impact: Help shape the curriculum and deliver state- and nationally aligned training on impaired and distracted driving

What’s a typical day as a Highway Safety & Impaired Driving Instructor SME?
You will:

  • Develop and update lesson plans and course content for DUI, drug-impaired driving, and general highway safety programs

  • Create instructor resources and curriculum materials

  • Design and implement practical training exercises and assessments

  • Evaluate, critique, and improve instructional delivery to maximize training effectiveness

  • Serve as the subject matter expert in drug recognition, drug trends, youth drug use, distracted and fatigued driving, and related crash factors

  • Provide guidance on adult learning principles and instructional methodologies

  • Collaborate with the DPS Impaired Driving Coordinator and Division Chief to tailor training to Arizona’s evolving needs

  • Ensure all training aligns with national standards (including the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program – DECP)

  • Support program coordination and statewide instructor development for DECP activities

  • Produce reports and recommendations for ongoing program enhancement

This job might be an outstanding fit if you have:

  • At least 10 years of prior sworn law enforcement experience

  • Experience designing and developing lesson plans and law enforcement curriculum

  • A current IACP credential/certification (International Association of Chiefs of Police)

  • (Preferred) Business program management experience

  • (Preferred) Experience coordinating training programs
