What’s a typical day as a Pharmacy Authorization Technician? You’ll be:
- Conducting initial level medication prior-authorization, exception, and medical necessity reviews for coverage under members’ benefits
- Routing cases to the pharmacist/medical director for final determination as needed and issuing required member notifications
- Reviewing and interpreting prescription and medical benefit coverage, documenting medication history, and identifying missing information to assist clinical staff in the review process
- Collaborating with providers, clinical pharmacists, and internal teams to determine if case presentations meet approval criteria
- Contacting pharmacies and physician offices to clarify prior authorization requests and optimize the member experience
- Acting as a lead troubleshooter for the pharmacy help desk, customer care, and claim processors
- Ensuring accurate authorization entry and proper system interface for claim payment
- Performing system testing for upgrades and enhancements to care management systems
- Serving as a content expert and department liaison for pharmacy and medical drug authorizations and coverage
- Triaging workflow, monitoring work queues, and maintaining compliance with mandated review time frames
- Providing phone coverage for incoming authorization inquiries and information requests
This job might be an outstanding fit if you:
- Have experience in pharmacy operations, utilization management, or medical claims processing (required)
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of pharmacy management drug policies, procedures, and prior authorization processes
- Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
- Are comfortable with detailed case review, documentation, and working with multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Are able to provide leadership and serve as a subject matter expert on pharmacy and medical drug authorizations
- Can adapt to system upgrades and process changes with ease
